Head of UGCC: The Pope is not infallible
On September 13, 2022, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, explained that Pope Francis called Daria Dugina, who was killed in a terrorist attack, "an innocent victim of the war" because he did not know "who she was, what kind of person she was," Shevchuk stated this in suspilne.media.
“Obviously, the Holy Father was not fully informed, but simply saw that explosion in Moscow on the news and did not fully realize who the person that died was,” Shevchuk said, noting that the reaction of the head of the Vatican to the death of a journalist was “spontaneous, purely human.”
“He is a person who lives in a certain field of information policy and the information environment of Italy, in particular. Like all people, he watches TV and listens to news – not only the news that the structure of the Vatican diplomatic service offers to him. He reacts to it spontaneously, in a purely human way,” the leader of the Uniates explained.
He added that the Pope in this situation "is not infallible."
“We have been waiting for a long time for the Vatican’s specific document to clearly state who is the aggressor and who is the victim,” Shevchuk noted and lamented the “difficulties in communication.”
The head of the UGCC stressed that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demanded clarification from the Vatican ambassador, and the Uniates also turned to the Vatican for comments. According to Shevchuk, subsequent statements by the Vatican confirmed that the Pope's words had no political significance.
Recall that the pontiff said that Daria Dugina, who was killed in Russia, became an innocent victim of the war, his words causing harsh criticism with the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
Earlier, the UOJ wrote that, according to Shevchuk, it was God who resurrected the UGCC in the 1990s.
