On July 27, Cardinal Robert Sarah strongly condemned attempts to legalize euthanasia in France, calling such initiatives "barbarism and inhumanity".
Addressing a 30,000-strong audience at the Breton shrine of Sainte-Anne-d'Auray (Diocese of Vannes), he said, "Do not desecrate France with your barbaric and inhuman laws that encourage death when God wants life."
Cardinal Sarah arrived at Sainte-Anne-d'Auray as a special envoy of the Pope for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Saint Anne's apparition. The festive mass was broadcast by the CNews channel.
The Cardinal also highlighted that the Christian faith is not limited to social activity: "It's not about feeding the hungry or sheltering migrants. These things are important, yes, but they are not the heart of our faith."
He emphasized that without worshiping God, a person risks beginning to worship themselves. "If we do not adore God, we will end up adoring ourselves," the Cardinal warned.
He added that modern society replaces God with idols – money, screens, and other surrogates, losing its bearings. "What will save the world is a person kneeling before God," he declared.
Cardinal Sarah also touched on the topic of the desacralization of churches: "Our churches are not concert halls or cultural venues. They are the house of God," he reminded, urging believers to preserve the sacred space of churches.
In conclusion of his sermon, he addressed those suffering from infertility, illness, or spiritual darkness: "Worship is the only true answer to the enigma of evil. It is stronger than despair."
"The malice of the world will not prevail. God is infinitely good, and worshiping God is our greatest hope," the Cardinal emphasized.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the French parliament launched the process of legalizing euthanasia.
