Merciful God hates homosexuality, says Catholic Cardinal

On July 2, 2025, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hong Kong, Cardinal Joseph Chen, stated that homosexual behavior does not correspond to God’s design.

On his personal website, oldyosef.hkcatholic.com, the cardinal commented on the destruction of Sodom described in the Book of Genesis: “The most merciful God so hates homosexual behavior because it is far from His plan for humanity.”

The cardinal reminded readers that God’s plan is “for a man and a woman to be united in committed and eternal love and to cooperate with God so that new life can be born and grow in the warmth of a family.”

Chen also emphasized that true mercy does not lie in indulging ignorance but in telling the truth: “If people who know the difference between good and evil do not help ignorant people to understand the truth, this is certainly not an act of mercy.”

The cardinal argues that homosexual behavior harms both the individual and society as a whole, and often leads to personal tragedy.

At the same time, he stressed that the Church loves all people, regardless of their past or present way of life: “The Church certainly loves and welcomes everyone... but people cannot be allowed to remain in ignorance.”

The cardinal expressed hope that people with homosexual inclinations would find the light of the Gospel, overcome temptations with the help of prayer, the sacraments, and God’s grace, and choose a path of chastity leading to eternal life.

Chen also condemned the document Fiducia Supplicans, which permits the blessing of “non-traditional unions”: “The chaos and divisions in the Church in recent years (especially caused by Fiducia Supplicans) have made us feel that Jesus was asleep. Fortunately, with our ‘little faith,’ we woke Him and He rose and gave us Pope Leo XIV, who can calm the storm.”

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Vatican had allowed Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples.
