UGCC head: We do not understand the Trump administration's actions

The head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, stated in an interview with the American publication Aleteia that during his stay in the USA, he positioned himself as the "voice of ordinary Ukrainians." According to him, he spoke "not only on behalf of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church but also on behalf of ordinary people, the civil society of Ukraine."

Shevchuk did not specify who exactly authorized him to speak on behalf of all Ukrainians.

He mentioned that during a meeting at the White House with the head of the Faith Office, Paula White-Cain, he assured her of the observance of religious freedom in Ukraine.

"I emphasized that for Christians, Jews, and Muslims, Ukraine means freedom, while Russian occupation means persecution," Shevchuk stated.

At the same time, commenting on Trump's efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine, Shevchuk noted that "we often do not understand" the actions of the new White House administration.

According to him, there is allegedly "some concern and even skepticism among ordinary Ukrainians" regarding peace negotiations. Shevchuk accused "many officials" in the Trump administration of promoting Russian propaganda.

"I must say that such clichés about the situation in Ukraine, about all the reasons for the war, repeatedly used by US officials, inflict more wounds on Ukrainian hearts than Russian bombs," Shevchuk assured.

Earlier, the UOJ reported that, according to Shevchuk, "behind our backs, they are trying to bargain with our lives or coerce us into some imaginary truce, which in no way appears as a just peace for Ukraine."
